Chinua Achebe dies; aged 82

“I was standing beside my 16 year old cousin when I heard the news.
I exclaimed, “Oh my God! Chinua Achebe is dead!
My cousin asked. ‘Who is he?”

And my heart broke. In a country filled with so much negativity and few role models, she, and probably generations around her age, does not know one of the greatest African literary icons. We have failed our younger ones for we should be passing on the torch of information, if for nothing else, to inspire them and give them something real to be proud of.

I’ve given her a copy of ‘Things fall apart’ to read. I will pass it on as much as I can.  Our youth deserve to know there are other types of superstars out there and not just the musicians and actors. RIP Sir!
