Road ghosts: I didn’t believe they existed until I saw one

“I didn’t believe in road ghosts until one came my way a few weeks ago. I was on my way back to Lagos from Seme border and it was almost midnight. Because of the lateness of the hour, our driver was driving at high speed and just before the popular Maza Maza area in Lagos, what looked like a middle aged guy appeared in the middle of the road with his right hand raised. I tell you – the guy just mysteriously appeared in the middle of the road; I didn’t see him walk out from anywhere and I’m very certain because I was awake, alert and sitting in front with the driver.

Our driver saw him and hit the accelerator even harder. I screamed at the driver to stop but he told me that if he stopped, we would be in big trouble as it was a road ghost looking for blood to shed. When we passed and I looked back, there was nothing.

He, along with another passenger in the car who travelled often and late at night, started telling many tales of road ghosts they’d come across in their journeys. The road ghosts came in many forms – some appeared as little children and some came in the forms of very old women bent over walking sticks and usually, they just appeared in the middle of the road, forcing drivers to stop. He said those that made the mistake of stopping usually found themselves in nasty accidents and few lived to tell the tale. I’d heard many stories of road ghosts but I saw one and it was scary. And now, I believe.”
