Adoption from hell: my adopted child is the devil’s little helper

"Sometime ago, my uncle came to me about possibly adopting someone. He said he knew a group of young children whose mum abandoned many years ago and whose dad just passed away. They were dirt poor and had been neglected by their father who had favoured his cult religion over his children. My uncle was friendly with their uncle and he asked if I would be interested in informally adopting one of the girls. They wanted me to take care of the girl until she turned eighteen; she was twelve at the time. 

I was hesitant, wondering what kind of issues the child might have considering her slightly sketchy background. Also, I had a young cousin staying with me and I didn’t want any corrupting influences to taint her but my uncle assured that she was just like any other little girl so there was no cause for worry. Well, I took him for his word and brought her into my home and that day and the two months after marked the period of ‘many tribulations’ for me.

First, once she came in, she decided that she had to eat everything in sight, including my baby’s meals. She would eat all the meat and chicken in the pot of soup or stew and throw the bones back inside. All she required were a few minutes with the baby’s tinned meals and she would empty them. When she goes on little errands to buy stuff like chewing gum, she would always make sure to line her pockets with her own stuff without apologies to the owner of the cash she used.

Even though she was not Catholic, she was going to receive Holy Communion until someone told me about it and I stopped her. Of course, as usual, no apologies for her behavior; the girl didn’t care. When my cousin, who was about the same age with her, annoyed her, she would pee on the poor girl’s clothes and dump them back into her wardrobe. At first, I didn’t believe my cousin when she complained about this girl’s harassment because I could not imagine someone doing such a thing; I even accused my cousin of possibly bedwetting and dumping the clothes to hide the evidence. But one day, after my cousin's insistence that it was the new girl, I decided to ask and without blinking an eye, she confirmed that she did the deed. Her reason? My cousin annoyed her and she wanted to teach her a lesson. And while she was saying this, she was staring right into my eyes – creepy.

The final straw was when my cousin came to tell me that the girl had complained about my aged mother, staying with us, and her ‘supposed’ nagging, saying that the moment she got some poison, she’d spray it into her food and kill her so she would not have to listen to her nagging anymore. When my scared cousin told us, I almost passed out especially because from what I’d seen, I really believed she had the capacity to do it. The girl had serious issues and her behavior was proof of it.

This was just her second month with us but by this time, I knew I’d had enough so I honestly advised myself and decided I didn’t have the resources to handle such a troubled child. Once I got some free time, I sent her back to my uncle to take her back to wherever he got her from. However, her short stay with me has blessed me with a strong phobia for strangers; that girl was the epitome of a problem child or should I call her our local version of ‘Chucky’."
