My very sweet revenge on an old boyfriend

I was a very impressionable 19 year old when I met Adam. He was extremely charming, good looking and an impeccable dresser. Before we started talking, I would simply stare at him with such adoration that when he eventually asked me out, my friend said it was because my shining gaze didn’t give him much of a choice. But whatever it was that made him choose me, I was ecstatic to be his chosen one. I definitely felt lighter on my feet after our first date and the giddiness continued for a while. Then, one day, my bubble burst.

I walked in on Adam, who was 14 years older by the way, with an old girlfriend of his …in a compromising position. Like I had seen in many movies, I acted out my outrage and stormed off, waiting to be followed by my charming boyfriend. When I waited outside for about five minutes and he didn’t show, I quietly went back inside only to see they had continued with their good times. I was mortified.

My tone was less outraged when I tried to get an explanation from him but after he proceeded to coldly put me in my place, which was on the shelf of ‘mere distractions’, my voice had no tone at all. He brashly said that I was just something to pass the time with and he might have spent more time with me if I was a bit more interesting. I stood there for a few minutes – I think my shame glued my legs to the floor – until the amused look between him and his ex-girlfriend spurred my deadened limbs into movement and I confusedly walked away.

The next time I saw Adam, I was a twenty four year old working girl and while Adam was still good looking and charming, I had become better looking than I was and much smarter too. When I saw him, I didn’t even pretend not to like most people would have. I called out excitedly and walked over to say hi. And when I noticed he didn’t have a wedding band on, I doled out extra whips of charm, touching his arm, laughing at everything he was saying and just being very charming. He ended up asking me out on a date and I agreed – with a little bit of coy hesitation of course.

We went out on about six dates which always ended with a passionate kiss and nothing more. Living with my folks gave me the perfect excuse to leave him at the door every time. By the seventh date, which was his sister’s wedding, he was eating out of my hand. He introduced me to everyone we came across and dropped very obvious hints about our future. Every time, I would smile sweetly at him.

For our eighth date, I was supposed to go over to his place for the weekend and when I didn’t show, he started calling. When I didn’t pick up, he came over to my place that night and met me sitting outside our patio with a very cute male friend. The shock on his face was almost comical except that I was not in a particularly tickled mood. My eyes were cool as I looked at him. He asked questions and instead of responding to them, I began to laugh. I asked him if he thought I was stupid enough to take him seriously again after what happened between us the last time. He mentioned ‘our future’ and I snorted – I didn’t even bother to respond to that but I’m sure he got the message.

However, before I grabbed my friend’s hand and walked off, I made sure to mention my total lack of interest in seeing him again. My cute friend, who was just a friend, didn’t help matters as he used a hand to cover his laughing mouth. Of course, Adam didn’t know who he was so the karma factor was playing well in my favour. We left him standing there and after experiencing the same few shell shocked minutes I had those years ago, he walked away and I closed his chapter. Funny enough, we have met a few times since then and I always respectfully stopped to say hi and he always politely responded.
